Tech Section

SY - 21st September 2002

This is where I keep notes on technical subjects and little experiments. It's primarily here for my benefit, and the notes may be incomplete or obscure in places, but there's a possibility that some other folks may also find it useful.

Since I spend most of my time looking after a room full of Debian GNU/Linux machines, you'll not be surprised to learn that most (if not all) of these notes concern themselves with how to do things using Debian - although much of the software concerned may not ship with the current stable Debian release (called "woody" - see www.debian.org for details).

Subjects

There's not much here at the minute. In fact, these pages have been largely neglected for the last few months - although I am taking the time to ensure that all pages on this site conform to W3's XHTML 1.0 standard (hence the little logo an the bottom of the page).

Anyway, here's what's on offer:

Logical Volume Manager

There's a very good HOWTO for Sistina's Logical Volume Manager at http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/. I just use these as a personal quick reference guide.

I also have a shell script for setting up a basic logical volume configuration on a freshly installed machine. The script may be found here. It's not perfect, and you should really know exactly how LVM works before using it, but I find it useful.

vi - the Unix text editor

This is a quick introduction to the vi text editor, which may be found on most UNIX-like computer systems.
